How to Become an Evangelist
|
The following information has been provided to assist you in entering the field of evangelism. By reading the Church of the Nazarene Manual 408-408.7 entitled "The Evangelist" or 422-422.1 "The Song Evangelist", you will learn more about the responsibilities of those in evangelism. Pensions and Benefits defines full-time service as no less than 30 meetings (including a Sunday) per calendar year in Nazarene churches.
To be registered with the Revivalism Ministries office:
- Contact your District Superintendent for instructions on what he/she requires of you to enter the field of evangelism. This will include filling out an “Application for Certification for Role of Ministry,” which may be obtained from the District Secretary. The District Superintendent may also be able to answer some of your questions and concerns.
- Once you have met your District Superintendent’s requirements, ask him or her to write a statement of recommendation (see Manual 408.6). This statement should recommend you to pastors and churches as a registered or commissioned evangelist or song evangelist. It should also give details of your history in the ministry, state the date you are entering the field, and list your address, phone number, fax, and e-mail.
- Your District Superintendent will present your “Application for Certification for Role of Ministry” to the District Ministerial Credentials Board (DMCB) for assessment. If the DMCB approves your application, they will recommend you to the district assembly as a registered evangelist. The district assembly will then vote on your application.
- An elder or licensed minister desiring to enter the field of evangelism between district assemblies may be recognized by Revivalism Ministries/Clergy Services upon recommendation of the district superintendent. You will need to follow your district’s procedures to obtain district endorsement at the next district assembly.
How to renew your registration:
- Approximately 30 days prior to your district assembly, you will receive the “Annual Report of Evangelist” card. Complete both sides, noting any change of address, phone number, fax, e-mail or requests for change in status.
- Submit a log of all meetings held, along with your “Annual Report of Evangelist” card. The log should include the name of church, dates of the meeting, and the number of services. Along with a possible interview, this information will assist the DMCB in making their recommendation to the district assembly. Your registration will be voted on by the district assembly.
Please keep in mind the following:
- A full-time evangelist is defined as one who holds 30 meetings per year.
- A meeting consists of four services, which must include a Sunday.
- For those whose expertise is Vacation Bible School, one week (Monday thru Friday) constitutes a meeting.
